Hello Norfolk explorers 👋

September has arrived, and there's plenty happening across Norfolk this week, from heather walks and food festivals to cycling, running and live entertainment.

We spent some of the bank holiday weekend checking out the heather before it fades, watching the sunrise from John Denver's bench at Dersingham Bog (pictured above). If you fancy planning a trip of your own, we've put together a full visitor guide,. This year's heather is patchier than usual after such a dry summer, but it was still beautiful.

From there, it was on to Buxton Heath, another hidden gem with plenty of heather, some lovely trees and, apparently, wild horses, though they stayed hidden during our visit. The walking path there is a nice easy one if you fancy trying it yourself.

Also, Heritage Open Days booking is now open, and we managed to book onto a few really exciting ones ourselves. The most popular events have already sold out. If you haven't booked yet, don't worry. We'll be sharing our picks for the best drop-in events, with no booking needed, next week. All these events are free.

Plenty to fill the diary this week too. Tour de Broads brings up to 1,500 cyclists onto the Broads' quiet lanes, Run Norwich's 10K has already sold out (though the roadside atmosphere is worth catching even if you're not running), and the North Norfolk Food and Drink Festival returns to Holkham for its 17th year.

🍺 Shouldham Beer Fest (4–6 September)

An annual long weekend of real ales and ciders in the King's Arms garden, with live music and a relaxed, family-friendly feel. Free camping is available on the playing field for anyone staying over.

🥂 Kelling Heath Beer & Gin Festival (4–6 September)

Kelling Heath's popular September beer and gin festival is back, with breweries and distillers from across the region alongside live entertainment and food. A camping and touring offer runs across the festival dates for anyone staying on the park.

🍽️ North Norfolk Food and Drink Festival (5–6 September)

Now in its 17th year, expect more than 60 stallholders selling Norfolk's best artisan food and drink, from fresh meat and cheese to bread, chocolate and seasonal veg at Holkham. The cookery theatre is always worth a look, and there's plenty for kids too.

🌴 Taste of the Caribbean (5 September)

A one-day celebration of Caribbean food, culture and music, with traders, a dedicated kids' area and a VIP bar for those wanting a little extra. Under 14s go free with a paying adult, but there's no on-site parking, so plan your journey in.

🎨 Reprezent Mural Jam (5 September)

Free family festival on the seafront where artists create new murals live throughout the day. Use the code REPREZENT20 for 20% off ride wristbands while you're there.

🚴 Tour de Broads (6 September)

Up to 1,500 cyclists take on routes of 25, 50, 75 or 100 miles through the Broads, with feed stops, free event photography and a complimentary Adnams at the finish. Entries close Thursday 3 September, or sooner, it's sold out in every recent edition, so don't leave it too late if you want a place.

🏕️ Finnbar's Force Family Adventure Day (6 September)

A full day of high ropes, archery, canoeing, axe throwing and more at Eaton Vale, raising funds for the Norfolk children's cancer charity. Two ticket levels are available, and there's street food on site all day. Please note dogs aren't permitted at Eaton Vale.

🏃 Run Norwich 10K (6 September)

This year's race is officially sold out, but it's still worth heading into the city to cheer runners past Norwich Castle, the Cathedral and Carrow Road on the closed-road route, in support of the Community Sports Foundation.

🎭 Cromer Pier Show (27 June – 19 September)

The world's only full-season end-of-pier show carries on at the Pavilion Theatre, with singing, dancing, comedy and a rotating cast of guest acts running through to mid-September.

🎡 Summer Circus & Water Spectacular (8 July – 13 September)

International circus acts perform at Great Yarmouth's Hippodrome, building to a finale where the whole stage sinks into a pool for a synchronised swimming display.

🖼️ Raveningham Sculpture Trail (15 July – 6 September, Wed–Sun)

This year's Ritual-themed trail spreads 60 artists' work across three acres of meadow, garden and woodland at Raveningham. This is the final overlapping weekend before it wraps up on Sunday.

PS 🧡 On Sunday 30 August, we watched more than 80 trucks roll past Carrow Road as part of the 39th East Coast Truckers Children's Convoy, with a real crowd out to see them go by. It's such a special sight, the convoy supports children with life-limiting and terminal conditions across Norfolk, bringing them fun, smiles and unforgettable memories, with police motorcycle escorts guiding the drivers, volunteers and supporters safely on their way.
